About QVSC

Here are two different styles of starts to a race incorporated by two members of Q.V.S.C. The style on the left is the one we recommend!!

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

The guiding principle of our club is progressive, sound skill development in an enjoyable, positive environment that fosters fellowship, team spirit and self development.

COACHING

Coaching is the cornerstone of our programs. All coaches have attained a minimum Level 1 certification from the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance (CSIA) and/or the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation (CSCF). Some coaches of our more advanced programs have attained CSIA Level 2 and CSCF Level 2. The club provides opportunities for and encourages coaches to improve their technical and teaching skills by participating in annual on-snow seminars of the CSIA and CSCF and attending advanced certification courses. All coaches are also encouraged to attend QVSC's preseason mountain camp to work with our head coach and observe our upper level athletes.

PROGRAMS

Husky Snowstars

This is a national "entry level" program whose basic aim is to introduce and develop basic ski and ski racing skills for 5 to 13 year old children in an environment that emphasizes fun, teamwork and team spirit. Skiing skills are learned through a structured progressive program of exercises, games and free skiing. Skill acquisition is evaluated by progression through the eight levels of the Husky Skill Awards Program. Members also have the opportunity to participate in team races against other clubs throughout the province.

Development Team

Athletes who are at least 8 years old (as of Dec. 31 of the current season), have achieved Level 4 in the Skill Awards Program and are interested in competitive ski racing can join the Development Team which bridges the gap to the Alpine Race Team. Although the main focus of the program is the acquisition and refinement of technical skills through free skiing, athletes will also be introduced to gate training and race strategies. Members of the Development Team are expected to compete in all NGSL races and are also given the opportunity to compete in selected Sask Cup Races as determined by the coaching staff on an individual basis. Development Team members are eligible to attend QVSC mountain camps and other special training events. Athletes are encouraged to participate in a fall dryland program run by the Head Coach.

Alpine Race Team

Athletes who are at least 11 years old (as of Dec. 31 of the current season), of a sufficient skill level and interested in competitive alpine ski racing may join the Alpine Race Team. The main focus of the Alpine Race Team is to develop skills through gate training and free skiing and to build an athlete's self confidence. Although competitions reward individual results, team spirit is also emphasized at this level. Members of the Alpine Race Team compete in slalom and giant slalom races in the Sask Cup Race series held at various ski areas in Saskatchewan and the mountains. Athletes who obtain consistant top results on the Sask Cup circuit may have the opportunity to represent Saskatchewan at post season events and they may also have the opportunity to join the Provincial Juvenile, Development or Elite Teams and compete nationally. Alpine Race Team members are eligible to attend QVSC mountain camps and other special training or race events. Athletes are encouraged to participate in a fall dryland program.

Snowboarding

Introductory level snowboarding courses are offered as part of the NGSL program. If numbers warrant, intermediate and racing programs will also be offered. Skills will be developed with the Nancy Greene Ski League philosophy of learning in a fun and safe environment. Skill development will be evaluated through an eight level Skills Program. Members may have the opportunity to race at selected NGSL races throughout the province. It is anticipated that training sessions will be on Saturdays - watch for times once they have been determined.

Member Responsibilities

  • Participants in the Husky Snowstars, Devevelopment Team, Alpine Race Team, and Snowboarding programs are required to have lift passes and CSA standard ski helmets. These must be worn for all training and racing!
  • Coaches are not responsible for supervision of participants during lunch and other lodge breaks while training.
  • In addition to those expenses noted in the cost outline, athletes will also be responsible for travel and accomodation costs associated with races and mountain training camps.
